Suprax Information

Suprax (also known as Cefixime) is a semi-synthetic cephalosporin antibiotic, destined for oral use, which is able to reduce the development of the drug resistant bacteria.

Suprax Indications

Suprax is usually prescribed by doctors and personal health care providers to patients who are suffering from bacterial infections of the ears, throat, chest, urinary tract and to the individuals who have been diagnosed with the presence of a mild form of gonorrhea.

Suprax may also be recommended in the treatment of other medical conditions, but only if the personal health care provider, pharmacist or doctor recommends it.

Suprax Warnings

Patients should inform their doctor if they have had allergies to Penicillin and cephalosporin antibiotics, if they have stomach and intestinal diseases (such as colitis). If the patients see no amelioration of the symptoms after a few days of treatment they should announce their caregiver. Patients who are experiencing vomiting, nausea and severe diarrhea during the treatment with Suprax should talk with their doctor before taking anti-diarrheal drugs, because some of these medical products (like Lomotil or Paregoric) may worsen these symptoms.

The intake of Suprax is known to cause false urine-sugar test results in the case of the diabetic patients. These patients should tell their doctor that they are taking this medicine, before they submit an urine sample. Individuals who are suffering from any kidney disorder should discuss with their doctor before beginning the treatment with this medicine, because they usually need dose adjustments in order for this drug not to interfere with their medical condition.

Women who are pregnant or are planning to become pregnant should discuss this matter with their personal health care provider or doctor, before beginning the treatment with Suprax, as this medicine may harm the baby.

Suprax Intake Guidelines

Patients are recommended to ask their doctor how to take every dose of Suprax in order to obtain the best results during and after the treatment. Patients should pay attention to the doctor’s recommendations and under no circumstances should they deviate from them. In the cases in which the patients have more questions about their treatment they should ask their doctor or pharmacist for further information.

As we said before, the dose of this drug must be adjusted for patients who are suffering from renal impairment, for individuals who are undergoing ambulatory peritoneal dialysis and hemodialysis.

This medicine can be taken in without food, but the patients who develop an upset stomach are recommended to take it with food, even if food slows down the rate of Suprax’s absorption.  Patients, who are using a liquid from of this medicine, are recommended to use a measuring spoon, in order to be able to accurately measure their dose of Suprax.

Suprax Dosage

The individuals will be prescribed by their personal health care provider the exact dose of Suprax that they should use daily. Patients should not ignore the doctor’s recommendations. Adult patients who are suffering from urethral gonococcal infections and uncomplicated cervical infections are usually recommended 400 mg per day. Children are recommended to take 8 mg per kilogram daily. This quantity may be taken as a single dose or divided in two doses which are to be taken every 12 hours.

Children who are known to weigh more than 50 kilograms and children who are older than 12 years are usually prescribed by their personal health care provider the adult dose of this medication, which consists in 400mg of drug which should be ingested daily.

As the functions of the kidneys usually decrease with age and as this medicine is eliminated from the organism by the kidneys, the personal health care provider will prescribe the elderly people only a small dose of Suprax.

Patients who believe that they have taken an overdose of Suprax should immediately announce their doctor. Your personal physician will ask you to remain in the hospital for further tests and symptomatic treatment.
